Oh, do I like this reptile count much more than the snake count. It's just after seeing 13 snakes last year, I was wondering if that was the new norm. But so far, turtle sightings are in the lead, which suits me fine.
We were outside playing today, and Michael wanted to go down to the swingset. I always warn them to keep an eye out for snakes. You just never know in this crazy suburban wilderness we live in. And while our only venomous snake is the copperhead, other snakes will bite if startled. So, I walked Mike down to the swingset for snake patrol reasons, but instead of a snake, we saw this reptile. Much cuter. At first I thought it was just a shell, but then she popped out her neck and legs. This will be our fifth box turtle sighting this summer: female in the front yard, male on the driveway, baby on the driveway, female in a neighbor's yard up the road (did I blog that one?). And I think this is a completely different turtle from any of the other ones we have seen (different markings/notches on the shell). We must be abounding in turtles this year.
