The Tale of the (un)Dryer

Saturday - 7:03 p.m.: load of sheets and towels in dryer for guests arriving in 30 minutes...dryer checked...items wet, but not dry and dryer cold...after an hour of spinning in the dryer...choose stale towels and sheets that have been in linen closet for years for guests' use (the only ones we had left, btw)
Monday - 8:01 a.m.: call local appliance repair company (ARC)...they schedule an appointment for today
Monday - 2:34 p.m.: Patrick arrives from ARC...diagnoses that the problem is not a dryer malfunction but is electrical...maybe the outlet is bad...but he can't fix it because he is not a licensed electrician...he'll put me down on their list for tomorrow...and then he cleans out my lint-y dryer area
Tuesday - 8:17 a.m.: call the ARC...they put me on the list for today...I tell them that I will be home after 12...they assure me that it shouldn't be a problem and that an electrician - Mike - will come today
Tuesday - 3:45 p.m.: call the ARC to reconfirm appointment...receptionist assures me that Electrician Mike will be there today...
Tuesday - 6:00 p.m.: Mike has not shown up
Wednesday - 8:02 a.m.: call the ARC...mention that Electrician Mike never showed up and/or called yesterday...mention that I will not be home between 11 and 2 p.m. today...mention that someone needs to come fix my dryer t*o*d*a*y
Wednesday - 1:54 p.m.: Electrician Clay from ARC calls to tell me he's on my way...he gets my answering machine (remember: they were told that I wasn't going to be home until 2:00 p.m.) and since I'm not there goes on to the next job
Wednesday - 2:14 p.m.: after I get the kids out of swim trunks and peed and into beds for naps, I hear Electrician Clay's message and call ARC (now on speed dial) and ask why he called before I said I would be home and was he still coming today...I was told he was on a job and couldn't talk then but he would try to get to our house
Wednesday - 3:27 p.m.: Electrician Clay calls to say he is finishing up a job and will be there soon
Wednesday - 5:12 p.m.: Electrician Clay has not showed up...I call ARC...she says that Electrician Clay will be there any minute
Wednesday - 5:50 p.m.: Electrician Clay arrives to check out our dryer...Electrician Clay takes our dryer apart at the top (Patrick did not do that Monday) and at the bottom...Electrician Clay says the problem is not electrical but is a dryer malfunction...he can't fix this because he hasn't worked on dryers in 20 years...he will put it on the list for tomorrow...he will have the dryer repairman confirm with me about 10:30 a.m. tomorrow
Thursday - 10:34 a.m.: Craig calls to confirm he is coming today...I tell him I will not be home until 1:30 p.m....he says this should not be a problem
Thursday - 2:12 p.m.: Craig shows up to fix the dryer...Craig immediately finds the problem...Craig replaces the malfunctioning part...Craig makes my dryer work...Craig almost receives all of my surplus bags of Cheez Doodles...instead, Craig receives my check
Thursday - 4:08 p.m.: First Load of Laundry Dried This Week is fresh and clean and dry and hot and is so nice I almost cover it with chocolate sauce and eat it
Thursday - 5:01 p.m.: go to stop the Second Load of Laundry Dried This Week in the dryer before we jet to swim lessons...the dryer is cold...the laundry is wet...after 50ish minutes in the dryer
Thursday - 5:02 p.m.: Julie beats head against the wall

I am officially ready for my clothesline.
