"Love Winston-Salem" - Day Two (Cookies/Stuffed Animals for Emergency Personnel)

Well, our day started out kind of interesting with a phone call to the air conditioning repairman, the electrician (dryer issues), my husband to tell him about the first two, and one unusual insect. I felt like I had had a whole day by 9 a.m. But the best part was making Tollhouse cookies to take to firemen today as a part of "Love Winston-Salem". I don't cook/bake much with the boys, so they were really eating this up - both figuratively and literally.
By the way, our church does do community projects throughout the year and not just this week in July. However, this week is supposed to be kind of an intensive "service blitz" to jump start even more involvement of our members in community ministries/needs throughout the year in our city. And summertime is perfect for us to get involved since the 'chitlins' are out of (pre)school.
While the cookies were baking, I explained to Matthew and Michael that we would be taking a few (gently used) stuffed animals with us today for the firemen to give to children they meet who had been in some kind of emergency situation. They went to their rooms and each picked out three to take. For the past year, they both have really gotten into their stuffed animals, so this was definitely some sacrifice on their part.
We went to another host's house where we decorated gallon size plastic bags with stickers and thank you notes and then filled each bag with two dozen or so cookies as a treat for the firemen. Michael chose lots of eagle stickers for his bag and Matthew just decorated the thank you note. We heard the Bible story today of David and Goliath and related it to how our firemen have to be brave in tough situations and how just like David had a slingshot, so God gives our firemen special tools to use, too. Finally, we divided up bags of cookies and stuffed animals and left in pairs to take them to the firestations. We ended up at the Clemmons firestation and met up with about four firemen. We formed a circle around their flagpole with the other mom and child and prayed for the firemen's safety and protection as well as for the children that would receive the stuffed animals. Matthew chose to pray outloud, too, and when Michael heard his bro, he started praying at the same time. Sounded like they were speaking in tongues. But they're starting to get it, and I know it is planting spiritual seeds in their own little hearts.

We can all be sweet and kind, yes? I am so thankful when my Wonder Readers share their positive thoughts with me!
